Then confirm the drain route while the blower and cooling system operate, check every joint and pan, test pumps and overflow controls, verify the discharge point and save photo evidence. A dry startup alone is not proof of dependable drainage.
Where Unclog fits

Pass commissioning first. Add scheduled suction second.

Unclog is not a substitute for the correct trap, vent, slope, pump, overflow protection or approved disposal route. It becomes relevant after those items pass and the technician positively identifies a compatible outdoor termination.

  • Verify: The primary drain is open, intact and flowing normally.
  • Map: The accessible outdoor outlet serves the intended air handler and is not a secondary warning drain or shared branch.
  • Protect: Install Unclog at that verified endpoint and schedule suction cycles between maintenance visits.

Do not add preventative equipment to a drain with an active blockage, failed pump, damaged pan, incorrect piping or unresolved equipment problem.

01 · Scope

A checklist does not replace the unit instructions.

Condensate details vary with cabinet pressure, orientation, coil configuration, drain-pan design, local climate, disposal method and jurisdiction. The manufacturer’s current installation instructions, approved construction documents and the authority having jurisdiction remain the source of truth for the specific job.

Why generic slope and trap rules can mislead: The 2021 International Mechanical Code gives a minimum horizontal slope for condensate piping, while individual equipment guides may require a steeper slope, a particular trap geometry or a specific location. Use the most applicable requirement for the installed unit and local adoption. Never copy a dimension from an unrelated air handler.

Identify the system before testing the drain.

A useful commissioning record lets the next technician understand what was installed without tracing the entire building from scratch. Capture the equipment, orientation, drainage type and risk context before water testing.

03 · Static inspection

Inspect the complete assembly, not only the outlet.

Before operating the system, compare the installed route with the correct equipment instructions and approved job documents. The goal is to catch conditions that can make an initially clear line fail later.

04 · Operating test

Prove drainage under the conditions that can change it.

A water test performed with the blower off may miss pressure-related drainage problems. Use the equipment manufacturer’s commissioning process and observe the condensate path during appropriate system operation.

Photograph the identified outlet and visible proof of flow so future service teams know which pipe belongs to which air handler.
Introduce test water using the approved access and method. Avoid electrical compartments and keep the test controlled enough to inspect the full route.
Observe while the equipment operates. Confirm that cabinet pressure does not hold water in the pan or disrupt the required trap seal.
Inspect every accessible joint and low point. Look for seepage, sweating, sagging, movement, standing water and pump cycling behavior.
Verify arrival at the intended discharge. Confirm the water reaches the mapped termination or receptor instead of another branch or warning outlet.
05 · Protection test

Test the safeguard without defeating it.

Secondary drains, auxiliary pans, float switches and pump safety circuits manage different failure paths. Verify the installed protection through the approved procedure and restore every cap, switch, panel and connection before handoff.

Ready to pass

  • Normal primary drainage is proven.
  • Safety response matches the design.
  • Auxiliary pan remains dry.
  • No switch is bypassed or left out of position.
  • Results are recorded in the job file.

Stop and correct

  • Water remains in the primary pan.
  • A joint, pan or cabinet leaks.
  • The pump fails, short-cycles or cannot keep up.
  • A float switch does not produce the intended response.
  • Water appears at a secondary outlet during normal operation.
06 · Route map

Give the next technician an unambiguous endpoint.

Do not close the job with “drains outside.” Record where the pipe leaves the equipment, where it becomes concealed, whether it joins another route and exactly where it ends. When primary and secondary terminations are near one another, use the identification required by the applicable code and job documents.

A closeout photo should show enough surrounding wall or landscape to relocate the outlet, followed by a detail image of the pipe and any approved identification. Note whether the endpoint is suitable for routine observation and service.

07 · Product gate

Only recommend Unclog after five questions pass.

Contractor commissioning questions

Is pouring water into the drain enough to commission it?

No. A static water test can confirm part of the route, but operating pressure, pump behavior, safety controls and joint leakage also need the applicable test procedures.

Should every air handler use the same trap depth?

No. Trap requirements depend on the equipment and pressure conditions. Use the current installation instructions for the exact model and the governing job requirements.

What proof should stay in the job file?

At minimum, retain the equipment identity, applicable instructions, route notes, test results, correction record and photos of the assembly, safeguards and final discharge point.

Can Unclog correct a drain that fails commissioning?

No. Correct active restrictions, improper piping, pump failures, damaged pans, unsafe disposal and equipment problems first. Unclog is a preventative layer for a compatible drain that is already open and operating normally.

Does this checklist establish code compliance?
