A/C Stopped or Not Cooling?

System will not start

Check for water in the pan or switch chamber, but do not bypass the safety switch.

Cooling starts and stops

Intermittent drainage can repeatedly raise and lower a float. Electrical and mechanical faults can do this too.

Ice is visible

A frozen coil points to airflow, refrigerant, or equipment problems. Melting ice can imitate a drain overflow.

Use the drain as one branch of the diagnosis

If the thermostat is calling for cooling but the system is off, look for an activated float switch, standing water, or an overflowing auxiliary pan. Those findings support a drainage problem.

No water does not clear the drain, and water does not prove the pipe is the only cause. Thermostat settings, breakers, contactors, capacitors, airflow problems, coil ice, and other faults can also interrupt cooling.

Do not trade protection for temporary cooling

A float switch is meant to stop condensate damage. Holding it down or removing it can allow the pan to overflow. If water is spreading or the equipment is wet, turn the system off.

Clear and test an accessible drain only when the route is known and conditions are safe. Otherwise, call a qualified A/C professional to diagnose the shutdown.
